The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has revealed via their annual Health of the Nation report that GPs working within Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOS) settings have the highest level of job satisfaction in the industry.
The Health of the Nation report examines the state of general practice using a nationwide survey that collects data directly from practising GPs, non-practising GPs, and GPs in training. This provides crucial information on prevalent health issues, patient care, business, and the satisfaction and longevity of the workforce.
While overall job satisfaction increased from 66 per cent in 2023 to 73 per cent in 2024, GPs working in health services governed by Aboriginal communities reported the highest fulfilment, at a significant 88 per cent. These GPs were also more likely to recommend general practice as a career pathway, with 68 per cent saying they would. Further data revealed they benefited from the best work-life balance and lowest burnout rates.
The Chair of RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Dr Karen Nicholls, emphasised that these statistics reflect the rewarding nature of working in ACCHOs. These organisations provide culturally tailored, high-quality healthcare that effectively meets priority needs because they are designed by the community for the community.
Our own Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) workers have shared some of their personal reasons why the industry is a rewarding choice for GPs. You can hear their experiences firsthand in AHCWA’s new video feature promoting the sector as part of a local and international recruitment drive.
