Today is National Close the Gap Day, an opportunity to cast a light on advocacy for Aboriginal health equity and the work being done to afford us the same level of health and wellbeing as non-Aboriginal people.
Life expectancy for Aboriginal people still averages 10 to 17 years lower than that of non-Aboriginal people. The Close the Gap campaign seeks to addresses this huge divide by working to improve healthcare access, education, employment opportunities, and social and emotional wellbeing.
This year’s theme—‘Agency, Leadership, Reform’—highlights the importance of Aboriginal communities’ agency, leadership roles, and the systemic reforms needed to achieve health equality in Australia. It is a time to reflect on the strengths of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector, celebrate the progress made so far, and recognise the disparities still to overcome.
Our ACCHS are vital to primary health care for Aboriginal people. They give community members the mechanisms to address their own needs through an elected Board of Management that ensures holistic and culturally appropriate health services for its clients.
By embedding self-determination and Aboriginal governance in all its operations, our Sector works to address power imbalances and reduce health inequities.
Since the National Agreement on Closing the Gap was signed in 2020, AHCWA has remained committed to its success. We will continue to support our ACCHS, advocate for sovereignty, and amplify Aboriginal voices in health decision-making, working hard toward better outcomes and stronger, thriving communities.
Aboriginal people know what is best for our communities and our future.
